I shot this photo in the Akodessewa district, east of Lomé, capital city of Togo. There, is located the infamous “Marché aux Fétiches”, one of the largest Voodoo markets in West-Africa.

There, all sorts of strange plants, and dead animal parts, can be purchased from a Marabou in order to compose, all kinds of Voodoo potions and spells.

As an animal lover and wildlife conservationist, this massacre was infuriating to watch, and quite hard to photograph.

As a human, I was profoundly hurt to witness all these unnecessary deaths. I understand that folklore and traditions are to be protected. But as a witness of those moments, as a photographer, as a human, it is still hard to accept the deaths of all these animals for such anthropocentric needs.

So, maybe here is what the job of a photographer can be. It can be to capture the truth of a moment, no matter how antagonizing to their own values, in order to let others react as well and be informed... what do you think about that ?

Location: Lomé, Togo.
