Shot on a trip to one of the ice caves of Iceland. 14 hours back and forth but so worth it. We had search and rescue with us to check for fissures and crevasses in the fresh snow and a good thing we did because with their long poles testing the snow they found one right infront of the entrance to the ice cave. Coming into it just fills you with wonder and awe as the sheer size was just incredible. Deep inside it there was a geothermal area which made it unsafe to stay in for long due to the gases but still an amazing cave. =)

Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in a massive ice cave that was discovered a week earlier in Hofsjokull glacier in Iceland.

Time

I woke up bright and early and met up with friends for this trip from Reykjavik. Guided only by GPS coordinates it took us 17 hours over rough snow covered terrain to get to the ice cave, hitting it around noon for a couple of hours of exploring before heading back.

Lighting

It was a clear sunny day which is perfect for ice caves as the sun lights up the ancient ice with this crazy blue color.

Equipment

This is a selfie shot with a Canon 16-35mm MkII lens at 16mm on a Canon 5D MkIV body. Mounted on a tripod and connected to a remote so I could pose in the shot.

Inspiration

When I first got to the ice cave I was immediately drawn to this chamber. The sheer size of the cave was like nothing I´ve ever seen (and I´ve been to a lot of ice caves). After looking around I decided on the position and then walked into the composition, creating a nice leading line in the process.

Editing

There was not much that needed to be done in terms of post-processing and the little I did I did in Lightroom like pulling out the shadows and fixing the highlights. Along with that I added a vignette in Exposure X.

In my camera bag

My bag today consists of a Sony A7R4 body. 12mm Laowa lens. 24-105mm & 200-600mm Sony lenses. 1.4 Sony Extender. Nisi filters. And then all the small stuff like cloths, shower caps for when shooting in rain, extra batteries, remote, flashlights, gaffers tape.

Feedback

The thing I love about ice caves is that they are a living thing. Constantly melting and ever changing. So whatever shot you take is unique to you as the cave will have changed or may be gone a week or two later. I recommend using a wide angle lens and a tripod as you may have to do a long exposure to get that blue color to seep through. Travel with someone who knows ice caves as they can be unstable and you dont want any accidents (this one for example had a crevice infront of the entrance so we had SAR with us to map it out).
