Behind The Lens

Location

I captured this photo, shooting over our fence into the next door neighbour's backyard. (Swift Current, SK)

Time

I took this photograph at 5:53PM CST (2019 May 17).

Lighting

It was a beautiful mid-May late afternoon sun with some shade and shadows from the evergreen trees.

Equipment

I was shooting handheld with my Nikon D200 and a Nikkor AF - S VR Zoom - Nikkor 70 - 300mm f / 4.5 - 5.6G Lens at 130 mm Program Mode (Auto) Exposure f/5 1/125 sec ISO 400 White Balance set at "Cloudy" Spot Metering.

Inspiration

I enjoyed watching "Tonka" the dog next door in his backyard. I was outside with my camera at the time, so took it as an opportunity to shoot a couple photos of this handsome dog.

Editing

This photo was shot in JPEG. I used ACDSee ACDSee Pro 6 to do some cropping and to make some adjustments to the lighting, exposure and contrast.

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon D750, D200 and D5100 cameras in my bags along with my Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II,a Tamron SP 24-70MM F/2.8 Di VC USD, a Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD Lens, and a Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens. I also always have my Samsung S8+ SM-6955W cellular phone with me (I like to use it when I want or need a wider angle photo.)

Feedback

My advice for others is to keep your batteries charged up, keep your camera(s) handy (you never know when an opportunity to shoot will arise), and to appreciate everything around you and to always look for photo opportunities, then shoot, shoot, shoot.... shoot as often as you can and get off the main roads. This photograph was captured in my neighbour's yard as I leaned over the fence. Look around at your immediate surroundings -- you will find photo opportunities in your own yard, around your house, nearby parks, walkways, etc. and yes, even your neighbours' yard. (If you go on private property, ensure you ask permission prior to going on the property.) Take advantage of the lighting - when it is sunny or when it is cloudy or if rain or any other weather system is moving in, and play with your f stops. Move around -- shoot in different positions and at different angles. My advice is to also try different camera settings as well. Also take the opportunity to use all or most of your photographic equipment including your cellular phone.... Always take more than one photo ... you can always delete it if it doesn't turn out. When you download your photos, don't discard the photo right away because the colour isn't what you had wanted it to be. Try adjusting the lighting, exposure, etc, and also convert it to sepia or black and white... sometimes that is the only adjustment you need to make to the photo in post-processing. Most important of all... always have fun!!!! When I shot this photo, my camera was on "Auto" mode. I did not know how to utilize the DSLR options so it was used as a glorified point-and-shoot. After a few years of frustration, I enrolled in a beginner's DSLR workshop. Oh how I wish I had done that sooner. Since then, I have enrolled in a few workshops, and always get something out of them. My advice is to enroll in a workshop or two. It is always great to learn more about your camera, learn shooting techiniques, etc., and to meet like-minded people interested in photography.
