Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while sitting on the tarmac at the Vermilion County Regional Airport located just outside Danville, IL.

Time

I took this picture at about 1432 (2:32pm) on October 1 of 2017. It was a warm day, and the airport was hosting an air expo (airshow).

Lighting

I used natural lighting as this was taken outdoors.

Equipment

I utilized my Canon EOS Rebel T6 for this shot. It was a father's day gift from my wife and I was trying new shots and lenses. I prefer hand held to tripods for most of my shots and it was no different on this day. I am freer to move about and pick different cameral angles with off-hand shooting as opposed to utilizing a tripod for stability. With this shot I was sitting on the tarmac with my legs stretched out in from of me and my elbows sitting on my stomach supporting the camera. I utilized my 70-300mm Canon Telephoto lens. 1/2000 sec. f/5.6 300mm where the settings that I used for this shot and several others.

Inspiration

I am a photography buff and an airplane NUT. I have always loved to fly and take pictures. I took my 12 year old son with me to see the airshow and take pictures. I wanted to create memories with him that he will pass to his kids someday. When I too this shot, the Stearman was just beginning his take-off roll. At first I thought that maybe he had blown a gasket and would have to abort his take-off, but soon realized he had popped smoke to add to the effects of the airshow. Earlier than the rest of the aircraft did that day.

Editing

Post production processing was very little. I cropped the picture to the aircraft that I wanted and centered him up in the frame. Then I enhanced the color and clarity a little bit just to make sure everything looked bright and clear.

In my camera bag

In my bag I always carry an 18-55mm lens, extra batteries, special affects lenses, and my cables to download pictures ASAP. I currently have a 2.2X telephoto lens that I don't like due to fogging at the larger mm settings like 200 and above. This works great if you want to create a picture that looks antique without doing much work to it.

Feedback

My advice for taking pictures like this is to take your time and follow through with your shot. When I am at the track (NASCAR, Indy, F1), I have to relearn to move the camera with the object of my shot otherwise it tends to blur. The same is true for shots of aircraft even if the angle of the picture makes them appear to be moving slower that the 185 mph of the cars on the racetrack. Focus on the larger object and the details will appear in post production. Relax and have fun!
