Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Larisa, Greece, where I live. I was waiting for my colleagues to pick me up at our usual meeting point, so as to go to school. So, while I was passing by a fennel, my eyes laid on this larva. So I went back to my parked car, picked up my camera, went to shoot it while my colleagues stared at me from their car with surpsise. It was a beautiful morning and the truth is that I was looking for this little fellow for quite some time! It was October the 20th.

Time

This is probably one of my favorite images. It was taken in the morning, around 9.10’.

Lighting

It was a beautiful, still warm, morning in October. It was a sunny day and the photo was taken with physical lighting, no flash used.

Equipment

This was shot with my nikon d200 camera with my nikor 105mm macro lens on and no tripod

Inspiration

I love macro photography. I usually capture flowers, insects and butterflies. So, when I saw this caterpillar, i thought to myself "You know which butterfly is, you have captured it, now you are lucky, you can shoot the larva as well". I tried to balance the camera on my arm, cause I did not have time for my tripod and, click! Little beauty all captured!

Editing

Usually i do process my photos only a bit. I shoot in RAW format and i "play" with contrast/brightness, sometimes curves and levels so as to make it a little bit more clear and brighten up the colors. I choose to save in tiff format at the end. I am an amateur photographer and have limited knowledge on post-processing skills.

In my camera bag

I have backup batteries and memories, as well as my 18-200 nikon lens. I also carry a tripod in my car, which i must admit that i do not use very often.

Feedback

If it is a cloudy day, definitely use a flash. In general, macro photography requires steady hands, in my opinion. And if you want to capture something similar to that, you definitely need to go out, into the countryside or the woods! Just go out and enjoy nature. Be patient, especially bugs that move quickly can be a pain in the neck.
