Location
Templo, one of the five waterfalls at La Paz Waterfall Garden in Costa Rica.Time
After driving for an hour and half, I arrived at the sanctuary at around 10 AM. It was early enough to beat the crowds. My first instinct was to hike the trails first in order to have a clear scene of the waterfalls. After walking around for a bit, I eventually reached the first waterfall, Templo, where this photo was taken. At this time, surprisingly, nobody was around and had the waterfall to myself. I walked down to the river and climbed up a boulder to get a steady platform for my tripod. This photo was taken on November 10, 2017 at 12:13 PM.Lighting
The best things about taking photos in the rainforest is the low lighting provided by the combination of overcast skies and the canopy provided to eliminate harsh lighting from the sun.Equipment
The equipment I used was a Canon 6d, Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM lens, B+W Polarizer Filter, and a Manfrotto 390 Tripod. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
The best thing about visiting an area on multiple occasions is that it allows you to improve on your previous work. Mistakes were made my first time around which allowed room for improvement. A year later, with more knowledge and awareness, I was determined to improve my photography. Instead of walking in blindly, in my mind, I knew what outcome I wanted for my photo. I arrived to the same location and scoped out the scene. Climbing that boulder elevated the camera enough to capture the river and waterfall in the frame. The river and rocks leading the viewer to the waterfall.Editing
Since there was even lighting throughout the scene, nothing out of the ordinary for post-processing. I added a bit of brightness, contrast, and black to the raw image to bring out details and color. In my camera bag
I will always pack my Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM. The majority of my landscape photos are taken with that lens. My Canon 6D body would be the next piece I would pack, since it’s the piece I have learned to use well. Then my most recent acquired piece the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM that is always attached to the body. Not only do you get great sharp photos, but also fun to use. Finally, my Manfrotto 390 tripod for those low light situations.Feedback
Low lighting is key in order to achieve the cotton candy effect for waterfalls and flowing water. The long exposure will create that effect. Dawn and dusk are the best time of day. However, overcast skies or a ND filter will help achieve the same outcome. Position your camera at a higher elevation in order to get the whole scene. A few feet can have a major impact on your photo. Finally, always check the weather and plan ahead before heading out.
