Location
On the way to Hoover Dam, there is a small quaint town called Boulder City. Desert bighorn sheep are known to wander around the town. While driving toward the Hoover Dam, desert bighorn sheep were moving along the local streets heading toward their grazing grounds. I followed the herd right to the point where they have reached their destination. Once I was able to park alongside the road, I grabbed my camera and started walking toward the herd. At a safe distance, I position myself to watch and capture some images of the bighorn sheep. Then there was a moment when an ewe started to pay close attention to me and gave a long gaze.
Time
This image was captured on a summer early afternoon. The sun was blazing and the temperature was in the triple digits. This was taken on Wednesday, ?July ?11, ?2018, ??12:57:52 PM.
Lighting
The desert sun gets pretty bright but thankfully the ewe was under some shade from a towering tree.
Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 6D, with an Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L lens. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration
Since my early years, I have been fascinated with the desert bighorn sheep. It’s our state animal for Nevada.
Editing
I converted the image to black to white to add a bit of drama to the photo and added contrast to make the subject pop.
In my camera bag
I will always pack my Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM. The majority of my landscape photos are taken with that lens. My Canon 6D body would be the next piece I would pack, since it’s the piece I have learned to use well. Then the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM that is always attached to the body. Not only do you get great sharp photos, but also fun to use. Finally, my Manfrotto 390 tripod for those low light situations.
Feedback
With wildlife, always plan to spend a couple hours with your subject/s. This will give you enough time to watch and capture their behavior. Wildlife can be unpredictable with their actions so always be at a safe distance.
