Quintana Roo - Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico

I enjoyed a nice break from posting here while traveling in Mexico. While I was there, I got to dive and swim in cenotes, which are mostly fresh water underground caverns. The general theory is that they were formed when sea levels were much lower. These subterranean areas were very spiritually important to the mayans who lived here thousands of years ago.

Whether it's the complex ancient stalactites & stalagmites, the crystal clear azure water dazzling in the light, or the sprouting of life, it's not hard to be in awe of this wonder of nature.

I visited this chamber on a small tour, wading through chest deep water, and swimming at times. I was transported to another realm, where the outside world was no longer a consideration. I was left to hear the echo inside the cavern walls, and the cool fresh water surrounding me.

On a dive at a different location I witness completely submerged cave structures backlight by sun rays creating shades of the most beautiful tones of blue.
