Location
The photo was taken in Owl Woods on Amherst Island in the St Lawrence River near Kingston Ontario in January.Time
The photo was taken around mid morning as we searched for owls.Lighting
The day was overcast so there was no harsh light. It was snowing a bit and was very cold that day.Equipment
This photo was taken on a Nikon D7200 with a Nikon 70 to 300 mm lens.Inspiration
I am always out photographing birds and other wildlife.Editing
Since I shoot in raw, I post process my photos in Lightroom and Photoshop. In my camera bag
I usually carry three lenses with me, Nikon 18-150, Nikon 70-300 and a Sigma 150-600. I also include in my bag a 1.4X extender and a polarizing filter. During the summer I include a Sigma 105 macro lens for photographing butterflies, dragonflies, flowers and insects.Feedback
Research before travelling to the locations. Web sites such a eBird, What Bird,Cornell Lab of Ornithology, your local Audubon Society, local birding groups and government sites describing local parks and conservation areas can provide information on what birds you might encounter which will give you some idea of what equipment you will need to capture the photo. Also, read everything you can about birds, their habits, habitat, migration or whatever subject you are photographing. Finally, know your camera.
