Behind The Lens
Location
The photo was taken in Wales, UK at one of Wales‘ many reservoirs.Time
This is probably the third time I visited the site. I have wanted to take this shot with the overflow actually running. You need to park on the other side of the reservoir and walk back to this side to get the shot. The water is not always high enough to flow over the overflow.Lighting
The shot was taken late afternoon in the late afternoon to avoid direct sunlight from above and the clouds helped soften the scene.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D810, can‘t remember which lens, and using a tripod.Inspiration
I had been past the reservoir several times on my visits to Wales and the first time that I saw the overflow the water level was high enough to see the overflow in action, however I did not have my camera with me at that time. Hence the multiple trips to the site always prepared with camera and tripod and be disappointed as the water level was not high enough.Editing
I usually shoot with the intent of producing a B&W picture. This means that I have to process the colour image camera Raw first and then continue in Photoshop until it is ready to convert into B&W. For this conversion I have my own personal workflow. In my camera bag
I always have my D810 packed and usually select a prime 20 mm f2.8, a 24-70 mm f2.8, a 105mm Macro and a 70-200mm f2.8. Not to forget the tripod some spare batteries and a selection of filters including a Polaroid and Variable ND Density filters and adapter rings to fit the different lenses.Feedback
If you know what shot you want to achieve, be sure to have plenty of patience and accept being disapointed if certain conditions are missing. Perseverance pays off in the end and it‘s all the more satisfying.
