Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Thomas Creek park in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada (eastern side).

Time

My guess is mid-day. After all, this image was photographed four years ago! Hard to remember the exact time.

Lighting

The area is heavily forested and as the season was early winter, the natural light was fairly dim but adequate.

Equipment

I used a Fuji FinePix HS50 EXR model camera at ISO 100, and an f stop 5.6. No flash, but yes... a tripod. A 10 stop filter for the lens.

Inspiration

The greatest challenge is to get ice in focus which is what the whole excursion was about. And, slowing the shutter enough to display a soft water flowing below the ice. This specific spot on the creek has great seasonal appeal, but winter is indeed the ultimate expression.

Editing

Minimal Post. Photoshop CS6 for clarity and noise reduction.

In my camera bag

Currently I shoot with Olympus camera. Both bodies are OMD-E10 MkII. Generally one had a 75-300mm lens, the other a 14-42. Spare batteries, of course, and several filters. 10 stop, 400ND.

Feedback

Since this area is fairly local for me, planning ahead is not necessarily essential. Something I realize most others will advocate. Obviously checking weather conditions is something any photographer automatically does before heading to a more distant location from home; however, and dressing for that location is fundamental. Slow shutter photography does take practice so don't be discouraged.
