Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at home using basic photo grey backdrop.

Time

Probably some afternoon. Since it's a fully arranged scene with artificial light, it could be at any time of the day :-)

Lighting

Many of my portraits are done with one light source and so was here. Main light came from the speedlight with softbox 90x90cm. On the oposite side I used reflector to light up shadows.

Equipment

Camera: my trusty, old Canon 1Ds Mark II Lens: Canon 85/1.8 USM Handheld shot Flash: one speedlight Metz 58-AF2 Softbox 90x90cm and reflector

Inspiration

The time of the year was the inspiration :-) It was December and Christmas was coming. So, the inspiration was all around me and the model, my son, seemed to be just perfect for the shot :-)

Editing

I shoot RAW so post-processing is just part of my workflow. In this case there was a little bit of "photoshopping" - to keep the mood and overall appearance I had to add extra light to the candle in the lantern and make it look naturally. Apart from that, basic touches: contrast, WB etc.

In my camera bag

I try to keep it minimalistic and I try to predict what I could need and then work with what I have. Usually, beside the EOS 1Ds Mark II body i have Sigma 35/1.4 A lens and C85/1.8 USM - my workhorses. Sometimes I choose 24mm lens, usually with the analog camera - Canon EOS 5.

Feedback

Anyone who worked with kids knows that you need to be quick - kids won't wait calm till you finish your setup. You should be prepared with the scene before you introduce the model. So you have to get all set and tested. Then you need to find a way to keep child's attention for enough long time to take a picture. Be quick :-) As for moody lights and candles - usually it's a must to post-process these lights to get the correct feeling.
