This was taken at the rocky outcropping along Long Island Sound at Silver Sands State Park in Connecticut.Time
This was Christmas Eve and I had only a small window of time that I could get away from family and photograph. When I got to the beach, it didn't look like the sunrise was going to do anything. It was low banks of clouds so I was preparing for some really long exposure black and white images. Just a few minutes before sunrise, the sky started to explode.Lighting
The most intriguing thing to me was the way the light played off the wet rocks in the foreground.Equipment
This was shot on my Canon 5dIII on my Sirui Tripod. I used a 5 stop ND filter and 2 Stop ND Grad in the Wine Country Filter Holder to get the water to soften out a bit.Inspiration
I was looking for something interesting to shoot while traveling with only a small window. I found this wonderful outcropping with the rocky lines leading out to it and decided that it provided enough interest to move the eye around the frame.Editing
This was a combination of two different shots. One below the Horizon and one above. I use Lightroom to process the images and the Lumenzia in Photoshop to blend via Luminosity MaskingIn my camera bag
I carry a Canon 5dIII, EF 24-70 2.8LII, EF 70-200 2.8LII, and the EF 16-35 2.8 LIII. I recently upgraded to the EOS R. When I'm out doing things like this I carry one of two tripods: The Sirui 2204w or the FLM CP34L4. My filter kit is the Wine Country Holder with a 2 stop ND Grad with a 3,5,10, and 16 Stop ND FiltersFeedback
Get up early! This light only lasts for minutes. You've got to be in-place and ready for the image at minimum 30 minutes before sunrise!
