Location
This was taken at the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory in Cambridge, Ontario, CanadaTime
I remember that it was early afternoon but I had no real sense of time as it was inside a very tropical conservatory and I felt like I was in paradise. It was so humid and hot, I kept having to check my lens for any condensation.Lighting
It was kind of dark because of all the foliage and overhead vines growing everywhere but some sunlight filtered in through the skylights. The sunlight helped to illuminate the petals.Equipment
This was taken with my older camera, a Sony SLT-A58, with a Sony 100mm F2.8 Macro lens. You are not allowed to use a tripod in the butterfly conservative as the aisles are quite narrow and they pose a tripping hazard to the other visitors. I had to take it handheld.Inspiration
When I saw this Double Hibiscus flower, I was impressed with how delicate and frilly it was. It was quite a large flower and stood out among the green tropical plants. It was the only one in bloom and I liked how it hung down like it was bowing.Editing
I did some post-processing using Adobe Photoshop Elements just to pop the colours a bit and increase the contrast. I found it to be a bit flat until I played around with the contrast which made the pink more realistic of the actual flower. In my camera bag
I now have a new camera that I absolutely love. I have a Sony a7ii that I received for Christmas this year. I have my favourite lens with me all the time, a Sony 100ml F2.8 Macro. I also take my Sony 11-18mm F4.5, Sony 75-300mm Macro F4.5 and lastly my Sony 30mm Macro F2.8 lens when I want to do more than close-ups. I love taking macro photos so I tend to use the 100mm & 30mm lenses the most. I always have a spare charged battery as I've learned the hard way that it might come in handy.Feedback
There are lots of different places where you can take pictures of exotic flowers and plants. The Butterfly Conservatory is a great place for tropical plants, birds, butterflies and insects. You need to make sure not to overdress in the tropical setting! Greenhouses are another great place to find inspiration if you enjoy taking macro flower pictures. I also go for long walks on the many trails around my city and I always see something new. Macro is great because you can take pictures of things that others would normally overlook. I look for different patterns, lines, contrast and shapes in the tiny things. Sometimes I get a nice surprise when I look at the pictures on my computer screen and see that I captured something that my eye didn't!
