Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in may 2017 at my studio in Amstelhoek, the Netherlands. Using studiostrobes to have total control of the light.

Time

Not that it matters for the light, becuase the use of studio strobes, but it was shot at 3:18 PM

Lighting

I used two Bowens 500ws monoheads, a 150cm octabox on the right and a 130x20cm stripbox for fill slight behind me on the left.

Equipment

Camera: Olympus E-M1 with a Leica Nocticron 42.5mm ƒ1.2 shot at 1/250 sec. f8.0 on a Manfrotto 055PROB tripod.

Inspiration

I'm am a big fan of the Belgian photographer Stephan van Fleteren. I love the rawness and high contrast of his images. He definately inspired me to take this shot.

Editing

I used Adobe Lightroom to process this shot and did some minimal changes in exposure and bumping the higlights/shadows. Only a big bump in clarity to get that raw contrasty look. After that processed it to BW and gave it a bit of silvertoning in the shadows and highlights.

In my camera bag

This shot was taken with my Olymus at the time (2017). Last year i switched to the Sony A7III. And always have it in my bag with the Zeiss 55mm f1.8 on it.

Feedback

Taking a good selfie is certainly a challenge and you get so much more pleasing results taking it with your slr instead of your phone with it's wide angle lens. Use a tripod and phone as a remote or if your camera does'nt support that use the timer and make your pose ;-) quickly. And using strobes is really not a nescessity, natural light and a reflector can give you nice results as wel!
