Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken at Ft. Whyte Alive in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It's a large tract of land donated by a local business that was once used by the business in the manufacture of concrete.

Time

It was about noon. A close friend was visiting from Australia that happens to be a real bird enthusiast, so I suggested that we go to Ft. Whyte to photograph some of the winter species. This doe, along with her mate, walked right into the scene. Sometimes it's good to be lucky!

Lighting

Nothing special. It was pretty much overcast.

Equipment

Canon 5DIII, Sigma 100-400 at 400 handheld.

Inspiration

It's always a treat to have wildlife that you weren't expecting walk into a scene. The plan was to photograph birds, but you take advantage of every opportunity that these lovely critters give you.

Editing

Typical, lower the highlights, raise the shadows, a bit of clarity, up the contrast a bit. Some sharpening, but not much else.

In my camera bag

Depends on the shoot. For this occasion, all I had was the camera and lens. If I'm not so sure, I'll add a 35mm prime.

Feedback

Patience. We had been sitting for about an hour and a half when this lovely lady showed up. It was winter, but it wasn't too cold, so we weren't uncomfortable. If you're not familiar with the area, a little scouting ahead of time helps.
