Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken from the rocks below the cliffs at St Govans on the south coast of Pembrokeshire in Wales.

Time

This image was taken in the late morning after I finished work. I had already visited the west coast of the county with a client and so knew that the largest seas would be in the south due to the wind direction.

Lighting

This was a rare occasion where we had a strong storm coming in from the Atlantic without rain. It was a beautiful sunny day but I was fighting a constant battle with sea spray clouding my lens.

Equipment

I used a Canon Eos 600d with a 75-300mm kit lens mounted on a gorilla tripod

Inspiration

I have always loved storms and am lucky enough to live on a dramatic coastline where they frequently roll in from the Atlantic . With the sunny conditions I was hopeful that the location I had in mind would allow me to safely get some dramatic shots of the huge seas.

Editing

I always shoot in RAW and so post processing in Photoshop is a necessity. White balance, exposure, curves, brightness and contrast were all adjusted until I got an image I was happy with. I also increased vibrance.

In my camera bag

Along with my 600d I also have two kit lenses, a 75-300mm and a 18-55mm. I have both a gorilla pod which is very handy when clambering over rocks and a conventional tripod as well as a trigger lead for shooting in low light. I also have a range of filters such as polarisers and Nds. Lens cleaning gear is essential and I never travel without it.

Feedback

Although planning ahead is great where possible never be afraid to act on the spur of the moment. There are times when this may not work out but there are also those when you will reap the rewards. Be prepared to spend a lot of time on location.....on this particular day I was out for about 5 hours. Light is constantly changing and what can look totally uninspiring one minute may be captivating the next. Have passion tempered with patience. Experiment with your settings and with your POV. Most important of all enjoy what you do.
