Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a sunflower field outside of Atlanta, Georgia.

Time

This was a very hot day full of bugs and humidity! We were there at about noon in order to practice in harsh sun.

Lighting

Harsh sun is one of the hardest photography lighting situations! It's all about finding your light and having your subject put their back to it. If you can't find even the slightest shadow, see if you can make one! Play with shadows and light until you find what's working.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 6D Mark II on an 85mm at f/2

Inspiration

We both wanted to practice harsh lighting conditions. We saw a sunflower field and started brainstorming with the color yellow!

Editing

I always do post-processing, even if it's just a touch of sharpening. This involved some balancing of shadows and highlights with some HSL editing of the color green.

In my camera bag

I always pack my Canon 6D Mark II with my 40mm pancake lens. Light, compact and straight forward!

Feedback

I suggest trying to see your surroundings with a new eye. I think sometimes new photographers get super caught up in trying to find the perfect scene with the perfect lighting and the perfect model (myself included). It's not about perfection, it's about making art in a way that feels true to you. You can shoot in a back alley and make it look like a magical sunlit summer adventure. There is no right or wrong, just practice and play.
