Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from historic Hollywood Cemetery in downtown Richmond, VA looking down towards the tracks. I heard the train coming and waited for it to get into my shot of the winding tracks.

Time

This was part of a late afternoon photo shoot with a local photography group in November 2017. Hollywood Cemetery was designed in 1847 as a “rural” style garden cemetery to escape the grid-like monotony of city cemeteries. Landscape architect, John Notman, specifically left trees and other plants untouched when designing the cemetery's landscape in order to create a peaceful haven for Richmonders. Today, our 135 acres of valleys and hills are covered with heritage roses, stately trees, and other blooms that live up to the name of a garden cemetery. In 2017, Hollywood Cemetery was named a recognized arboretum with the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program.

Lighting

Natural lighting and a beautiful day

Equipment

This was a handheld shot using my Nikon D5000 and Tamron 18-200 lens. I don't have any other information on this particular shot.

Inspiration

I love our downtown area and the trains that run through the area along the river. One of my favorite places to shoot!

Editing

This shot was taken in RAW as I do all of my photography. I did some minor edits using Adobe Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I always pack my camera, now using a Canon 7D, my 17-85mm lens, 70-300 zoom lens and 50mm prime 1.8.Fin

Feedback

Find places where the natural beauty inspires you. We are lucky in Virginia to have so many historic properties, the mountains and the coast all within driving distance for a day trip.
