These stone-like towers are tufas. They are formed by underwater springs that push minerals into free form piles of stone. As the water table in the lake has dropped (streams feeding Mono Lake are diverted for use my the city of Los Angles), the springs have died and left these strange structures. Some are over 15 feet tall. At this time of year, the Galactic center of the Milky Way stays hidden below the Sierra mountain range, but you can still see the arch across the sky. I managed to catch a falling star in the lower left portion of the sky. That's lucky right?
