Sunset... 6:53pm Golden hour March 5, 2017Lighting
The sun was starting to set to my right. It cast a lovely golden hue on the pilings, water and clouds in the distance. Only ambient lighting was used in this image.Equipment
This image was shot with a Canon 5D mark III, on a Manfrotto tripod and a variable ND filter, using a wireless remote trigger.Inspiration
It had been raining off and on and I had been cloud watching for days. Finally there was a nice break at sunset. Grabbing my camera and tripod I hurried to the Aptos Wharf at Seacliff State Beach. Initially I thought I would capture another view of the decaying USS Palo Alto at the end of this wharf. Even if I have shot a subject before I often go back to try another view. I took a few shots, but the wharf called me to explore a different view completely. So I took a gander from below. I liked the soft golden hue of the clouds in the distance. I chose to make this a long exposure giving the image a dreamy feel. The flowing water was a challenge... everytime a wave came up, I had to wait for just a moment for the sand to settle before exposing. I went home with soggy shoes itching to see my results.Editing
I typically edit in photoshop. This image didnt require too much editing...just a little contrast tweek and a bit of vibrance. In my camera bag
I typically pack my Canon 5D mIII and a 24-105 L series lens. I also bring a 14mm 2.8 Rokinon as well. Always in my pack are my ND filters and 2 wireless remotes.Feedback
The Monterey bay coastline offers a wide range of different looks, rocky beaches, light houses, beach goes, sail boats and harbors, sandy shores, tide pools, sea stacks, and wild life galore. I suggest, finding an interesting foreground and shoot it from many angles, COme back at different times of day. Even after dark the same subject can look very very different. Mostly have fun and experiment
