They say an image can tell a story. That it's a thousand words. This image represents the story of two lovers... They were first immigrants fleeing Germany during hard times. They later became pioneers. And they completed their journey by becoming neighbors and friends.

Behind The Lens
Location
The photo was taken in their bedroom at their home. She had multiple sclerosis and so they each had their own single beds. Here he is sitting on the edge of her bed to give her a kiss. It was a very special and touching moment to capture.Time
I remember it was early afternoon on a sunny wintery November day. I had gone over to speak with them about their story immigrating to Canada from Germany for an assignment for my university photojournalism course. She was still in bed from her daily afternoon nap. He went to her bedside and they started talking about their family and the photos pictured behind them.Lighting
The lighting in this space was tricky. It's an older house with only a few windows and not the greatest lighting on the ceiling. The room was giving lots of warm light making everything extremely yellow and orange. The best way to take the photo and to give it a timeless look was to transform the photo to black and white.Equipment
This photo was shot with my first DSLR a Canon Rebel t3i. I took the photo back in 2014. I don't remember which lens was used but I can remember the only equipment was my camera and lens.Inspiration
It was part of a photo essay I was working on. I was taking photos of them in their home and was lucky to come across this special moment between them. They were my neighbours and my grandparents' longest friends in Canada. Prior to capturing their love, they shared with me their story - their journey filled with hardships, joyful moments and unforgettable memories - which only strengthen their love for each other.Editing
It was extremely hard to fix the white balance - it was too warm. I wanted the photo to be timeless and what better way to showcase timelessness then making it a black and white photo. In my camera bag
Nowadays, I have my Canon 5D Mark IV with a few lens, especially, my 50mm and 24mm-105mm lens. More and more, I try to only carry one lens with me to test my creativity. I'll usually also have my flash, a couple of spare batteries and extra SD cards. Lastly, I always have some mint gum and a pen handy in my camera bag - you never know when it might come in handy!Feedback
Take the time to get to know your subject or subjects, if possible. Also, multiple visits can be advantageous in order for them to get comfortable around the camera. With this couple, I got this photo on my third visit. I also knew them as my neighbours since I was a kid, so it was easy for all of us to be at ease in the space. Listen to their stories, be kind, respect their boundaries and you'll get some great shots.
