My daughters and I visited NYC for the first time in October, 2017. We had the standard list of tourist-y things we wanted to do--ride the Staten Island Ferry, see the Fearless Girl staring down the Bowling Green Bull, stroll through Chinatown, walk the High Line, and catch a couple of musicals on Broadway. Someone suggested that, while we were uptown, we visit the September 11 Memorial, and so we did. The other days of our visit gave us sunny skies, but as we made our way to the memorial, it started to rain, so we stopped at a pharmacy to grab a couple of umbrellas. Coming upon the memorial, I didn't really know what to expect. I hadn't read about the reflecting pools or the stencil-cut names inscribed in the bronze parapets around the pools. As my youngest daughter stared into the pool, I raised my camera to catch her profile, but she glanced at me just as the shutter snapped. To me, the rain, the dark umbrella, the dark tones, the sunglasses--useless in her hands--and the somber expression on her face perfectly sum up how it felt to take in the memorial.
