Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the valley of Chamonix in France.

Time

I had been walking for a few hours already, enjoying the view, when this guy appeared in the sky like he was coming from nowhere.

Lighting

It was about the right time for light as a bit later the mountains would not have had any shadow on them and they would look flat.

Equipment

I was using at the time a brand that no longer exists: Minolta. The lens was a 18-70mm and I used 70mm. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

The photo was taken in 1992. At that time this kind of sport was not as popular as it is today. The touch of color was great and the framing was just perfect. I had one opportunity, not several.

Editing

The original was a Fujicolor Velvia 50 slide. I now live in the tropics and unfortunately I waited a bit too long before scanning my slides. I had to correct some mold in the pale sky and I desaturated the picture to leave only the color of the paraglider.

In my camera bag

I always carry the minimum I need according to what I am looking for. In the case of this photo I was looking for beautiful mountain landscapes, so I had a 24x36 (called today full format) and a wide angle or a 'short' zoom.

Feedback

Mountain landscape photography is a bit challenging. In a same day you can get different kinds of weather so be prepared. Do not carry tons of equipment but think about carrying a Neutral Density filter and/or Graduated Neutral Density filter, as the density of air in altitude is not the same and the risk of getting a uniform sky is high.
