A cold front moving westward across southern New Mexico was stopped by the Guadalupe Mountains and a low ridge extending to the southeast; winds blew some of teh cold air up the face of Guadaluipe Peak, resulting in clouds wreathing the peak.
Cold air is heavy and dense, and moves in a layer close to the ground. In this case, it was so shallow that a ridge only about 2,000-feet high was high enough to stop the cold air.
