I cannot recall the exact beach/break I took this photo. Truth is, I was so incredibly phyched to be standing on the north shore of Oahu. What I do know is that it is somewhere between Sunset Beach and Haleiwa.Time
After arriving on the island and making our way to and checking into our Hotel, it was well into the afternoon before we made it to this beach. It was still several hours until the sun would set.Lighting
The weather in Hawaii is spectacular! It rains almost everyday, and when I say rain, it often times is just a super fine mist which for us photo folks makes for some incredible lighting! This day some weather was just passing over the island making the light over the water darker with the sun coming back out over the island highlighting those famous waves.Equipment
I shoot with my Nikon D7000 this was a handheld shot as I still hadn’t acquired a tripod. I wish I could expand on settings and lens used, but I was just in awe of being there!Inspiration
It was my 40th birthday, and having grown up reading (mostly looking at the photos) of all of the surfing magazines and knowing that the North Shore of Oahu is the Mecca for the surfing world, this was a bucket list item for me! Standing on these legendary breaks and being able to capture them for eternity away absolutely a dream come true!Editing
At the time of this photo, the only post processing ability I had was in the standard editing programs in iPhoto on my Mac. I have since purchased Lr and Photoshop and they have opened up new worlds for editing. If you have not yet acquired Lr, DO IT you will not regret it !!!In my camera bag
I am still shooting my D7000 and carry three lenses a Nikon 70-300mm,18-105mm and a 18-70mm. I also have my extension tubes, cable release, ring flash and tripod.Feedback
Shoot, shoot, shoot ! The obvious we all already know...the Golden Hours, sunrise and sunset are just spectacular and there are several apps that can help with these times. But also, I believe the more you’re looking through a view finder the sharper and more perceptive you become to “seeing light” and you’ll find yourself viewing all kinds of situations and wishing you had your camera!
