This is a fantastic or rather typical example of an indoor/natural light /available light photography with Black and White premeditated. I hope you understand what I mean. I simply wanted a Black and White portrait before the shoot. I live in Germany and would consider myself first as an Engineer and Second as a Photographer. I learnt photography (and still ) through conversation with friends, workshops, online training and more from networking through social media.Time
This image was taken late morning/noon. For an indoor portrait, I would not care too much what time the image was taken. My focus will be that there is sufficient light coming through the window. More importantly, the light from the window has to be indirect (I simply made sure that there was no direct sunlight/reflection falling on the subject)Lighting
I have spent the last 1-year learning how to shoot for a black and white image. My principle can be sum up below by the words of the great Leonardo da Vinci. “A painter should begin every canvas with a wash of black because all things in nature are dark except where exposed by the light.”? Leonardo da Vinci. With the above in mind, I want to make sure the am exposing correctly to ensure that I am able to introduce light to the specific area in the image where required. It is much easier to recover shadow than to sunlight/reflection highlight. It is much more than the recovery of shadows/highlights it for into proper zoning of grays.Equipment
EXIF extract below. Canon EOS 5D Mark III Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L Image setting at 85mm/ƒ/1.8/1/400s/ISO 100. I love the details/sharpness that 85mm prime creates. The main light to the subject is from the right (Big Window) and fill light from the left with a small reflector.Inspiration
I am inspired by the purity in black and white photography (portrait). I must note that I am also inspired by the work of Tobias Glawe and since then began a personal quest to create compelling and rich tone black and white. I have said it previously on my fb profile that Planning is essential for creating a beautiful black and white portrait. Shooting for black and white requires a specific approach to how you expose your subject more so because Black and white portrait photography is not the absence of colour, it is the preservation of it thus exposing the soul of the subject. My inspiration is the purity of the image (the subject)Editing
I start my post-production from Adobe Lightroom and end up in Adobe Photoshop. Most time I also return to Lightroom to use my LR preset.In my camera bag
I don’t have so much in my camera bag. However, I always follow a basic step process to prepare for any photo. A day before, I check I have my batteries fully charged. I seem to have spares for everything (Batteries, Memory stick, Lenses (24-70 f.28, 85mm f1.2, 100 mm f.12 and 70-200 f2.8) I have 1 Lovely Canon 5D MK III in my bag. People tell me it is not good to have just one camera, but I guess it is just enough. I usually make a decision on what lens to use before the shoot.Feedback
Natural Light Photography is amazing and simple STEPs 1. Have your subject by a rather large window with soft light 2. Use a reflector to fill the subject from an opposite or 45 degrees to subject 3. Underexpose your shoot by 1-2 stops 4. Use your histogram to analysis your image information. I am trying to have a bell shape when I do this. It does not have to be perfect. 5. Post-production is everything for me. Here you want to introduce highlights and bring in light/life to the image. Try frame the subject with light if that make any sense. 6. Retain skin texture, introduce noise/grain (I love this) 7. Export for suitable media. Thanks John Ekor (ZINOJOHN)
