Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at New Zealand Hobbiton Village, it was the village where The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbiton movie is taken. It was my first visit to this beautiful country and I would said the Hobbiton Village is one of the must visit site for photographer to take breath taken photos.

Time

I remember it was about 4pm-5pm, a good time of the day to take landscape and the sky.

Lighting

The not so strong neutral light at this time of the day was perfect for the water reflection also for both the sky and the mountain to have a balanced exposure.

Equipment

This was taken with Sony A7 II with Sony GM 24-70 2.8/F Lens

Inspiration

I want to find a balanced composition between the village house , the lake and it's beautiful mountain background and most importantly I want to avoid the tourist crowd. So I decided to take the photos across the lake to have this magnificent view.

Editing

Yes, I do post-processing in Lightroom, especially for this type of landscape photos, as exposure is not always balanced between the sky and the ground. (often one is over- or under-expose). As I shot mainly in RAW so I have a lot of dynamic range to work with, to correct the exposure.

In my camera bag

My go to camera is Sony A6000 and Sony 10-18mm F4 Ultra Wide lens, which is light-weight and easy to carry around and give great photos especially Landscape. If I do portrait on that day, I will take my 35mm F1.8 lens as well. For taken some serious shot, I also bring along a Sony A7 II with Sony GM 24-70 2.8/F Lens, to have a dual camera setup.

Feedback

One tips of taking photos at the Hobbiton Village, since you are only allow 2 hours to stay at the village for each visit, you may skip the guided tour speech and take your time to take photos. As for taking Landscape photos in general, time of the day is important, best time would be early in the morning and toward the sunset hour, as usually the sky will have more colors and the exposure between the sky and your front ground elements can be easily balanced. Also bring along a Ultra wide and long focal length lens, will help you find more interesting view of the scene then standard zoom lens.
