Location
I took this photo at the beach in the Hook of Holland, near Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Not far from home and lots of space to isolate the subject.Time
When I went out to scout the perfect location, the sky had amazing colours. Almost deep red, it was a really amazing sunset. The day we went out to make this photograph was grey and cloudy, not exactly what I was hoping for, but it turned out very well. The combination with the fencing outfits made it almost monochrome by it self!Lighting
I took my studiogear with me, that day at the beach, but there was no need to. The natural light was more then enough to make this shot.Equipment
I used my Canon 5D mark II with Tamron 28-75 2.8 lens, no tripod. I was lying on the beach and the wind was blowing sand in my face and against my camera, but, we both turned out fine :)Inspiration
In that time and when I was much younger I was a fencer myself. So I saw a lot of fencing matches, it was so pretty, athletic, powerful and distinguished to look at. But always in very, ehm, ugly buildings. That was when I got the motivation to enhance the beauty of fencing and took the fencers to the beach.Editing
The photo didn't need lots of work. In Lightroom I removed some garbage, added contrast, exposure and highlights. In my camera bag
My Crumpler contains my Canon 5D Mark II, a Tamron 28-75 2.8 and the Canon 70-200 4.0 lens. Besides that I have a little cosmetic bag, filled with batterys and memorycards. And not less important: some food, painkillers, plasters for blisters and handkerchiefs to keep me going when needed.Feedback
Be sure you ask people who are motivated and able to do such athletic moves over and over again. It take some time to capture the right movement at the right time. And! You need permission to carry and use weapons out in the open. You don't want to get arrested during the shoot.
