The Eldred Rock Lighthouse was built in 1906, following the sinking of the Clara Nevada in 1898 during a storm. It is a matter of some debate whether this was accident or sabotage, as the boat was destroyed in an explosion. The large shipment of gold carried by the Clara Nevada was never recovered, and all on board were believed killed. Despite this, one of her boats was found undamaged on the shore of Lynn Canal, and a number of her crew members later plied their trade on other ships far from Southeast Alaska. Whatever caused the ship to strike the small island, the tragedy was enough to convince Congress to build a lighthouse here. The lighthouse is no longer manned, but it continues to warn the ships captains who ply the waters of northern Lynn Canal, between Haines and Juneau in Southeast Alaska.
