Alaska's Southeast Panhandle is part of a temperate rainforest. Harbors along the Pacific Coast rarely ice over. During a cold spell, the ocean does begin to freeze. Here, large pieces of pan ice have formed, drifting with the current. The ice edges are marked by small pressure ridges formed as the floes grind together. This is a narrower section of the harbor, away from the open water. The ice has filled the open space, with gulls standing on the icy water.
