Imagine my excitement when these three majestic creatures walked into the pool of light shining on this waterhole. I was sitting with my camera just above water-level and only two or three metres from their feet. Looking up from my viewfinder to be confronted by their massive bodies is a memory that I will treasure forever.

The rhinos have had their horns removed to make them less attractive to poachers; unfortunately this isn't enough to keep them safe, as even the stumps are worth a lot of money in China and Vietnam, where their horns are considered to have medicinal properties even though they are made of keratin, the same as our fingernails.

This image was taken from the Umgodi Overnight Hide at Zimanga Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.
