Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is taken in a Ghanese (Africa) village, Somanya. At a marketplace a woman was selling eggs while taking care of her young child.T

Time

Taken in the afternoon.

Lighting

It was cloudy. With colored people you have directly a contrast between the lightened parts of the face.

Equipment

Shot by Nikon D700 with the zoom 70-200mm.

Inspiration

Although I'm an 'white' european, the local people didn't pay attention to me. So I could smoothly walk around a local marketplace and observing the local people. Very colored dressed and friendly people. A lot of women carry their selling ware on their head. A woman feeding a baby took my attention. I phocused on the baby and waited till the young child was looking at me.

Editing

I like to give my pictures a kind of 'vintage' look by using the Nik software. By Silver Efex Pro, I change the colored picture to a sepia-coffee toned picture with a high percentage of structure. Apply the layer above the original picture and change the opacity to a 60%. Then flatten the image and you get 'old' colors.

In my camera bag

In my bag I have two camera-bodies (Nikon D700), a wide-angle zoom 17-24mm, a normal zoom 35-70mm and tele zoom 70-210mm. One flash (SB900) and remote trigger (Cactus). ND-filter and Polarizing filter to have deeper (sky)colors.

Feedback

Ghana is a beautiful country. Good weather conditions and friendly people. The live on the rhythm of the music. For photographers who like to take portraits, it is a good place. There several ritual festivals and it's whorthwhile to observe the people.
