Location
This was taken in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, by the shore of Frame Lake. It was a beautiful day with the sky offering a wide range of textures and shades.Time
I don't remember exactly, but it was probably taken in the early afternoon, as the clouds and the sun were playing hide and seek with each other.Lighting
The light was all natural and I had tried to capture the range of lighting in the sky above me, from the bright, blue sky at the top left, to the darker, thick and somewhat ominous clouds moving closer to the middle and right of the frame.Equipment
I was using the Canon EOS Rebel SL1 with the standard 18-55mm kit lens. I had no tripod and was just walking around letting my eyes wander.Inspiration
I liked the thick watercolour texture of the clouds as they gathered above the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. The weather was warm and the breeze was moving the clouds along at a fairly brisk pace. Out of the shots that I had captured of this scene, I liked this one in particular. I wanted to emphasize how large, beautiful, and even overwhelming the sky can be in Yellowknife.Editing
I did not do any post-processing at all. I am still learning how to get as close to the image that I have in my mind from the camera directly, before delving into the challenging world of post-processing.In my camera bag
I carry my Canon EOS Rebel SL1 with the 18-55mm kit lens. I have a Canon nifty-fifty and a 24mm for those moments that can benefit from a nice shallow depth of field. I also carry a Canon55-250mm zoom lens, to get a little closer to some of the wildlife around. I also carry a Zoom H4 to connect to the camera to get a slightly better sound for capturing some of the ambient sounds wherever I am, be it around the lake, at a restaurant, or on the bus.Feedback
I would just recommend letting yourself just stop and look up at the sky. Look at the shapes, textures, and tones and wait until the right scene invites you to capture it.
