Behind The Lens

Location

Took this photo in one of Kyoto, Japan's most famous district known as Gion. It is known as the Geisha district.

Time

Naturally the photo was taken quite late at night, as this is when this district would start to come to life with the nice red lanterns lighted up along the rows of traditional wooden tea houses.

Lighting

No special lighting involved but more of waiting for the right time to take the shot when the cars zoom by.

Equipment

Shot it with my D750, a 24-70mm lens, and my sirui tripod.

Inspiration

To be honest, I always wanted to take a photo of the famous geishas' walking down this alley way or street rather than instead of capturing this as a street with light trails. However, when I was at the location itself, I quickly noticed the distaste these Geishas had towards rude tourists or photographers who try to sneak a photo of them without asking permission. Seeing them hurry and rush into their residences or workplaces while using their hands to cover part of their faces was just so sad. Instantly I improvised and changed my subject into taking light trails along this old traditional houses.

Editing

I did stack 2 photos to try to get as much details as I could out of the old buildings while having another one with the light trails. Some usual contrast and exposure tweaking and that was it.

In my camera bag

My trusty D750, 24-70mm lens, a 70-300mm lens, a set of GND lee filter along with the stoppers, a rocket blower, a couple of lenspen, a a high lumens torch, bunch of memory cards, 2 spare batteries.

Feedback

Look out for old alleyways that would be lit up by some old fashioned lanterns or lamps.
