Behind The Lens

Location

I was living out near Condon, Montana. It's a remote spot with the nearest decent town about 30 miles away. My brother in law and I decided to go for a drive just to take some pictures and we just happened upon this place. There were no real signs and when we came around the corner and saw this stream, we just had to stop for some pictures. We were like kids in a candy store, because we knew people had been up here to see this place. But, as far as we knew there had not been any photographers here. I love going to places like this, because you can go to places everyone else goes and get your take on the same place; or you can go totally away from everyone and bring the beauty to everyone.

Time

I would have to say it was around mid morning and this photo is kind of bittersweet for me because shortly after I took it, I wound up falling into the creek with my Nikon D7100. The camera was dead, but the pictures were still on it. This is one of those pictures.

Lighting

The sun was shinning brightly that day, but the trees around us blocked most of it out. I am more of a natural light type of photographer, so trying to find the right spot of light with the composition I wanted is a little bit of a challenge.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D7100 with battery grip, Tamron 18-200 F3.5-6.3 lens.

Inspiration

When I was walking around this creek, being careful and trying to find a safe way to get this angle (I was in the middle of the creek on a rock) I looked through my viewfinder and knew that I just had to take this shot. The sunlight on the moss with the rocks and trees laying across the creek framed the water just perfectly. Also, being able to slow the shutter speed down enough to get the water smooth was an added bonus.

Editing

I did do some post processing, as the original picture was way to bright in a couple of areas and the darks were way to dark. So, I raised the shadows and dropped the highlights and added some clarity. I didn't really do to much as this picture came out great.

In my camera bag

I normally carry everything I own in my bag; just because I don't know what I am going to wind up shooting. I always have at least a medium zoom and a telephoto lens depending on the look I am going for. I now have a Nikon D700 with a Sigma 28-105 (my main lens), I also have an older Nikkor 70-210 F4-5.6 and surprisingly I still carry that Tamron 18-200 that I shot this photo with and then fell into the river with. I let the Tamron dry out for about 6 months and to my amazement, it still works for some shots, it's not as great as when I bought it new, but it still works and will stay in my bag until it doesn't work anymore.

Feedback

Do not be afraid to go after the shot that you want. Take all the precautions you can to safeguard your investment, but at the same time, if you see a shot that you have to have...go for it. You will be rewarded in many ways than just the photo. You will have the memory of what you had to do to get that shot, how much fun it was, and you will remember it for a lifetime. Step out of your comfort zone and you will be amazed at the level your photography will take. One more thing, go where other photographer's won't go (even if it's around where you live). You will be surprised at the shots that are just right outside your door.
