Behind The Lens

Location

I had heard about this waterfall not to far from where I lived at the time in Bentonville, Arkansas. I always love nature and waterfalls so I thought I would go see what this new place was about.

Time

I believe it was on a Sunday morning (after the golden hour) but well before the sun was sky high. There weren't too many people out, so I had the place all to myself. I was just taking in the beauty of it all and saw this waterfall and knew there was a shot in there that I wanted.

Lighting

It was morning light, but not full daylight yet and I always try to use available light if possible.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D7100, the Tamron 18-200 f3.6-5.6 @ 18mm. I was at f8 and 1/4 of a second. It was something I had learned from a video on YouTube and I wanted to try it and see if it worked. I also used a K&F Concepts tripod and a nearby tree.

Inspiration

When I first saw this area, I just slowed down and took a longer look as I knew there was a look I wanted. I wasn't quite sure exactly what, so I took multiple photos and angles then I fine tuned everything to this shot right here.

Editing

I don't really remember, maybe a little clarity (I do mean little) and vibrance. I thought the shot came out perfect, it's one of those pictures that you look at and ask yourself, "did I take this?"

In my camera bag

Well since I killed my Nikon D7100 (found out falling in a creek with your camera doesn't work too well...lol) I now have a Nikon D700 with a 24-105mm lens. Also a 70-210mm lens, my K&F Concepts tripod, neutral density filters, batteries, CF cards, wireless triggers, gray card and a Gossen light meter.

Feedback

The best advice I can give to others; Is no matter what, stop, and just look. Don't pick up your camera, just look and see the whole scene. It doesn't matter if it takes 5 mins or 20 minutes. Because when you finally see "your" shot, you'll know it. You might not be able to explain it, but it will be a feeling deep down in your soul. (That is why if someone asks me what is the story, I don't know...I just know there is a story there. I leave it up to the viewer to find there own story from my pictures). Then, raise your camera and take the picture that you see in your mind. Life is a picture...taken, one shot at a time.
