It makes me wonder sometimes, the fact that these smaller leaves, to me, didn't really have a chance to grow to their full potential as with the other leaves, so does the plant restrict their size because it senses the oncoming autumn ? This may sound strange, plants sensing ! Well it's not so much "sensing" as we know it, but we do know that they react to the light levels getting lower as with the temperature falling, that's what starts the whole colour change, or rather the lack of green colour as the reds, yellows and other colours have always been in the leaf it's just we've only seen the dominant green until the plant starts to withdraw the chlorophyll back into itself ! Although it's a shame it does make for a rather fetching photo, I think anyway, especially when the smaller leaves have the large green leaf as a backdrop.
