Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my parents' gangway (in Illinois), where in the spring they have flowers planted along the house.

Time

This photo was taken midday, not a particularly sunny day. There was just enough cloud cover to shoot for the tones I like.

Lighting

I really like a natural, kind of neutral look to my photos. The cloud cover made it possible to expose this photo in an ideal way for me. A low ISO, high shutter, and a wider aperture granted me exactly the look I was hoping for.

Equipment

Just my Canon 60D and my 50mm.

Inspiration

I believe the inspiration sprung originally from a project I had in a photography class when I was still in college. I was taking photos of pieces of my vintage collection and felt that this sweetheart pin was just meant to go atop these flowers. It was just the perfect setting.

Editing

I applied a preset in Lightroom to warm and lighten the photo a bit, but no major changes aside from that.

In my camera bag

My 60D (currently my only camera body), my 85mm, 50mm, and I use my kit lens quite a bit as well! I tend not to use a flash unless I need it for work projects.

Feedback

When it comes to capturing objects like this, I really try to find what seems like the obvious setting, even though obviously a pin doesn't 'belong' outside atop a flower, and yet it does. There was no other way to capture the pin than this. And that's the feeling you want to strive for.
