Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken as part of a studio day shoot at The Picture Business, Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset (UK). The studio is tucked away amongst narrow streets and surrounded by terraced houses. Not where you might expect to find a photography studio.

Time

I had been wanting to work with Katy for a while and in order to make the most of this opportunity I booked 4 hours. We agreed to shoot from 10am to 2pm. With no natural light in the studio, you would really not be able to judge the time from the image. I so often work with natural light that it was a great challenge to work with strobes again.

Lighting

With any artificial lighting set up I so often find that less is more. I know there are photographers who produce outstanding work with lots of lights doing specific things. I tend to go the other way and restrict myself to 1 or 2 lights. This image was shot with a single large soft box set up to the left of Katy. The dimensions of the studio were quite restrictive for a large number of lights so keeping things simple really paid off.

Equipment

This image was shot on my Nikon D7200 with my kit lens (Nikon 18-105mm). The studio was stocked with Bowens lights and I used one with a large soft box

Inspiration

Katy has a really strong look with her shaved head. We covered a number of different sets covering a wide range from Art Nude to Alt. Fashion. But the first thing we wanted to try, from our initial communications, was an androgynous set. Katy provided the boots, trousers and braces and I dug out the white vest from my kit. A small step ladder gave Katy something with which she could pose and her acting ability gave us the character you see here.

Editing

Very little post-processing was required to finish this image. Mostly it was tidying up any marks on the backdrop.

In my camera bag

My camera bag contains two bodies, a Nikon D7200 as my main and my old D7100 as back up. I also take four lenses, two Nikon primes at 50mm f/1.4 and 35mm f/1.8 and a Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 alongside my kit lens. The remaining compartments contain my light meter, lens cleaning kit and some small items of clothing, jewellery, etc to quickly change looks. In my car is a larger bag containing my LED lighting kit if necessary.

Feedback

Androgynous images can be very interesting to shoot. When working with female models you are most likely trying to make them look amazing, but with this I wanted to avoid that. Katy had the absolute minimum of make up and the clothes were carefully chosen to look masculine and the work boots added that touch of inelegance. This was the first set we shot so that Katy would not have to take off make up but would instead add this for later sets as needed. It then needed Katy to play the role of a young man, which I think she certainly achieved. Any femal model can wear masculine clothing, but Katy was physically able to hold her body in a more masculine way.
