Gear capture creative tones and soft feel to the image

Behind The Lens

This picture was from a shoot with two models I had worked with several times before, although this was the first time they had worked together. We were shooting in the home of one of the models in Malmesbury, Wiltshire.
We met mid morning for this shoot. I met one model at a nearby rail station and together we travelled to the home of the second model. This image was about half way through our shoot and it was early afternoon on a lovely, sunny late summer day.
This image was shot using natural light from two large windows. These windows were large enough for both models to pose in one together. As you can see, the room also had light coloured walls which helped to soften the light.
For this shoot I used a Nikon D7200 with a Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 zoom lens. I used natural light only and was lying on the floor, bracing my elbows on the floor to steady the camera.
I don’t really plan my shoots but rather work with excellent models who can adapt to a situation as we explored possibilities together. In this instance we were shooting in a home and were looking to create something relaxed and gentle. Raiding a wardrobe for a couple of similar jumpers to complete the feel for this and then I could just let the models work within the theme we had discussed.
I try not to go too heavy with my processing. For this, I wanted something of a vintage look. Originally, I did basic adjustments in Lightroom (straighten, crop, minor sharpening and exposure tweaks). Then the image was passed through two Nik Collection plugins. These were Color Efex pro for the excellent Detail Extractor and the Analog Efex Pro for the vintage look. I usually find a filter that looks roughly as I want but often remove or pull back elements within it. Final adjustments such as very light skin work were done in Photoshop.
In my camera bag
The Nikon D7200 was my primary body with a D7100 as back up. My lens range consists of three Nikon lenses (35mm and 50mm fast primes and the 18-105mm kit lens), along with the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 which was very much my goto lens. Light meter, cleaning cloths and brushes and spare batteries make up my main kit. I usually travel light.
My job was made much easier working with top quality models. The whole shoot was quite a relaxed affair and we discussed opportunities as we went along, mostly centred around what natural light was available to us. I don’t give much specific direction, but prefer to give models a theme or situation and let them work within that basic scenario.
