Behind The Lens

Location

This pic was taken in Bigton, a small community in the Shetland Isles.

Time

I was driving down the road to Bigton and the sun was almost setting, about 9pm. The sun really set off the cotton weed and I stopped the car in the middle of the road and jumped the fence to take the picture.

Lighting

The sun was all the lighting i needed.

Equipment

I use a canon 6D and this particular shot was taken using the Canon 24-70mm L USM lens. I wanted to blur the cotton weed weed immediately in front and also in the distance so i used a low aperture setting.

Inspiration

The way the cotton weed was lit up with the sun really set the scene and I couldn't resist stopping and jumping the fence for the picture.

Editing

I used lightroom to enhance the sharpness and also applied a small amount of luminance. I added a little vibrancy to it as well.

In my camera bag

I have a 70-300mm L, 16-35mm L, a Tamron 16-300mm travel lens- great for when i'm on the move and need to travel light, a Velbon Ultrek UT43D tripod which is brilliant. I also work with a Pro ND 1000 filter from Hoya.

Feedback

Don't look at the sun through the viewfinder, use the LCD screen. Be prepared to stop anywhere to get the picture you want and don't mind having to lay down or get covered in spiders webs etc if you want the shot!
