Two years ago, I was certain as I lay in my tent (which is really just a soft taco to bears) in backcountry B.C., that I was going to be mauled by the grizzly walking along the beach (a story worthy of a good cup of joe). Earlier this year, I was held hostage in my car by a growling (and then howling) wolf that circled the vehicle 6 or 7 times (ya ya, I know, it's not like I needed to go anywhere, but I was still being held hostage!). This last weekend, I "encountered" the worst of them all when I was at Dinosaur Provincial Park. I mean, being mauled by a fluffy grizzly or fluffy wolf is ok, if I had to choose. Where I draw the line is snakes. At 3:30am on Saturday morning, I was packing up my camera, when I heard the rattle. No idea how close it was, but that didn't matter. I sure as hell haven't run as fast in my life as I did that morning. Oh, nature, how I love and hate thee. No matter what I do, you help me feel alive, it's what keeps me going (figuratively, and literally).
