Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the last day of a week long trip to Oregon during the descent from Tom Dick and Harry Mountain.

Time

On the last hike, the evening before heading back to Texas from Oregon, we first hiked to Mirror lake. At some point, we did not find the correct trail and decided to go ahead and try and head to the top of the mountain before the sunset. We watched the sunset and quickly descended the switch backs to try to make it out of the forest before dark. It was the end of golden hour and the onset of blue hour. The sun was setting behind us and there was just enough light during dusk to take this image.

Lighting

I wanted to capture the greenish blue color of the sky, keep the cloud formations visible, and also capture the headlamps of the mountaineers ascending Mt. Hood.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D5500 with the kit lens at 55 mm.

Inspiration

When you are in Portland and surrounding areas, Mt. Hood constantly glares at you wherever you go. The line up of the trees just above the treeline combined with the light made this an image I couldn't miss.

Editing

The image was primarily edited in Lightroom. I actually don't edit this way anymore, but I lifted the shadows, tuned down the highlights, upped the vibrance and saturation. I moved it into photoshop to turn down the noise and give it a bit of a painterly look

In my camera bag

Now, a Nikon D810, 14-24mm f2.8, 24-70 2.8, and 70-200 f2.8. If I know I am going to use a tripod, I bring a wireless trigger.

Feedback

The time of the lighting is everything. Look for angles and shape and the negative space.
