Location
Taken from the southern end of Pickering station on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.Time
Taken just before 6pm with the sun beginning to dipLighting
I liked the contrast between the cool dark interior of the station and the bright, warm areas lit by the sun.Equipment
Shot with an Olympus OM-D EM5 and an Olympus 7-14 f2.8 wide angle lens, handheld.Inspiration
I have been interested in railways all my life and take any opportunity to capture images of them. Staying overnight in Pickering I wandered down to the station to catch the last arrivals of the day. Pickering station is very atmospheric with its all-over roof and curving platforms. The train was stationary in the station for a long while and I was able to view it from a number of different positions and angles. I particularly liked the lighting in this one and the subtle 's' curve of the train leading back through the station.Editing
The dynamic range of the shot was quite wide so I spent time adjusting the highlights and shadows to better balance the exposure. The image was cropped to remove unwanted fencing to the left.In my camera bag
On this occasion I was only carrying the camera and lens I used for the shot. My general everyday walk-around gear is my Panasonic GX8 and Lumix 14-140 zoom lens.Feedback
Stations are great locations to shoot railway images. Trains are mostly stationary, there is plenty of scope for including architecture and paraphernalia adding to a sense of location.
