Location
Bixby Canyon Bridge off the Big Sur coast in California. I took about three photos total; all in the pouring coastal rain.Time
I shot this near golden hour but because of the cloud cover it would be difficult to tell. Considering it's the west coast it golden hour makes for a beautiful shot near this coastal bridge.Lighting
I was actually quite happy with the lighting regardless of my expectations. There was enough light to reveal the coast and it's features while not having so much light as to blow out any light trails I could capture from the oncoming cars.Equipment
I used a Canon 5D Markiii. With a EF24-105mm lens on some travel tripod I had at the time held together with duct tape.Inspiration
Every two years my wife and I take a month long road trip visiting various national parks and snapping as many awe-inspiring photos as possible. This bridge certainly falls into the awe-inspiring category. It has a very majestic presence. Perhaps it's how it's situated seamlessly with the coast and the cliffs, the way it sits overlooking the horizon or just it's lines and curves, but when you see it you want to capture it.Editing
I shoot in the raw to collect as much information as possible on the file, that way when I take it to post I can fully develop the photo in a manner closest to how I remember it from my eye...sometimes my imagination plays a role. In this photo I processed in lightroom for color and light. I added radial filters in a few areas to draw the eye through the photo and to add some life to certain areas that came across a little more flat, like on the legs of the bridge or side of the hill where light and color can be a little monotonous. In my camera bag
Depends on my shoot. My bag is a black box I toss in the back of my car, ready for some good travel and adventures and then I also have a studio set up. In my black box you'll find my trusty Canon 5D Markiii, a nifty fifty, 24-105mm and 70-200mm f2.8 and my rugged phantom 4 pro. I have rope, reflectors, tons and tons of batteries, speedlight, external shutter release. In the studio or less regged locations I use a 5D Markiv with my favorite primes: 30mm, 85mm.Feedback
It's worth waiting in the rain. It's worth sitting next to your camera with your aperture open for 15 minutes. I saw a car at the top of the hill so I set up my camera real quick and hit my external shutter, sat and waited for the car to make its way down to me and over the bridge. We were on a time crunch, but you should give yourself an hour or two to play. There are a lot of neat angles to shoot out there and a couple trails as well.
