Behind The Lens

Location

The story behind this photo was half luck and half patience. I was out walking along the water near where I live at sunset, and noticed a large number of birds near the water, so I decided to take my phone out, calibrated the exposure so I would get some nice reflections and shadows, and then just waited.... when a large number of birds decided to take flight, I started shooting. Most shots were not great, but this one really stood out, so I decided to make it one of my favourite sunset photos so far.

Time

About 5 PM

Lighting

Especially when taking sunset shots, it is worth playing with the exposure - even mobile phone cameras allow you to easily control the exposure of the shot by tapping on the focus point, then swiping your finger up or down on the screen.

Equipment

A Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge smart phone - nothing else!

Inspiration

I absolutely love shooting sunset photos, especially when there's people, street signs, or animals that can create interesting shades on the beautiful palette of colours of the sunset.

Editing

I only cropped it a bit, to get the right composition.

In my camera bag

My phone - that's it!!

Feedback

Shoot what you love, have patience, learn about the rule of thirds, and learn to use your equipment - in this case, knowing how to adjust the exposure on my phone's camera app meant the difference between a good shot and a great shot.
