A Moment of Seriousness

Five novice monks are focused for one brief moment. They were young boys, having fun, laughing, poking and pushing each other. The senior monk had his hands full keeping them focused. I caught the one moment with no giggles.

Behind The Lens

This photo was captured on a recent trip to Myanmar. We spent a portion of the late afternoon working with these young novice monks in a couple of different environments. Overall, it was a bust. They had too much energy to accomplish any sort of photo shoot. Somehow, I got lucky with this shot. It was taken inside an ancient temple in the city of Bagan.
The lighting was all natural. The candles provided a nice, soft illumination of the novice monks and their faces. There was also a lattice window (that was cropped from the scene) that provided some additional and much needed ambient light. Due to the low light of the environment, and the inability of the young monks to hold still. It was a real challenge to capture this photo.
Nikon D800, Nikkor 24-70mm / f2.8
It was all about the lighting and how the red robes glowed with the light.
I use Lightroom to organize my photos and do a majority of the post processing. For this photo, the post processing was minimal. It was limited to adjusting the black and whites, warming the photo to make the reds match what I had seen. I also cropped out a lattice window. Although it provided some added ambient lighting, it was a distraction to the main subject of the novice monks.
In my camera bag
This was shot with my previous camera, a Nikon D800. I have since upgraded my camera to the Nikon D850, and the three lenses I bring on every outing are the Nikon 24-70 / f2.8, 80-400 / f4.5-5.6, and a wide angle 18-35mm / f3.5. Depending on where I'm shooting, I may include my 60mm / f2.8 Macro. For filters, I always carry a circular polarizer, and a set of Lee filters: a soft graduated ND, a hard ND, a little stopper and a big stopper. I also have several sets of memory cards 64G and 32G, several extra batteries, lens clothes, a small air blower and allen wrenches for my tripod and tripod brackets.
Patience and being ready for "the" shot.
