Port Elizabeth - South Africa
A colourful, newly refurbished Swartkops River steel road bridge has been unveiled and reopened.
Port Elizabeth’s oldest steel bridge, which was closed for three months, has undergone a A$465,000 makeover which has extended its lifespan by 15 to 20 years.
It was originally built in 1879. All the badly rusted steel has been replaced and the rest of the bridge has been sandblasted, primed and painted in colours with high visibility.
It has been painted in six colours – yellow, red, green, orange, pink and blue – which all carry special meaning.
The colours represent:
•Yellow – Arrive Alive;
•Red – HIV-Aids awareness;
•Pink – breast cancer awareness;
•Orange – hunger awareness;
•Blue – water conservation; and
•Green – environmental conservation.

amazing and thank you so much for your description Brian! The meaning behind all is fabulous and very thought out. I had to wonder upon looking if maybe it has the recycled plastic mixed in as so many are doing now in construction yet since you added the paint description it must not have the plastic mix. It is amazing that you barely can even see vehicles passing through it. And your photo shows all the details that you described. another wonderful shot Brian...
