This photo was taken at Brockholes Nature Reserve which is not very far from where I live. It's a beautiful, peaceful place. The land on which the reserve sits used to be a huge quarry so it's lovely to see how the wildlife has moved in and made it it's own despite the fact it is at the side of a very busy section of the M6 motorway. I love coming here to photograph not only the landscape but the wildlife too.Time
It was around noon on a cold cloudy February day. The winter sun is quite low here and it was just glancing the little wooden jetty and the tree line in the distance.Lighting
In the winter the sun doesn't get very high here and the day I took this there was a little cloud overhead which diffused the light quite nicely. There was hardly any breeze which helped me capture the smooth reflections.Equipment
Camera Model Canon EOS 7D Lens Cano EF20mm f/2.8 USM Tripod Manfrotto BeFree Lee landscape filtersInspiration
I took this whilst on a walk around the nature reserve and as I got to the pool I saw that the light was striking the wooden jetty quite nicely and I'm a sucker for reflections so I counted myself quite lucky that I just happened to in the right place at the right timeEditing
Post processing was carried out in Adobe Lightroom (as always). Apart from some slight adjustments to the tone curve and boosting the saturation very little was done.In my camera bag
I usually travel with my Canon 7D a selection of lenses: Canon EF24-70mmF/2.8L Canon EF20mm f/2.8 USM and my Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L . I take my Manfrotto BeFree tripod because it's light and easy to set up quickly. My Lee filters are always in my bag.Feedback
Anyone can access the nature reserve either park off site and walk in or use the car park. It's an easy walk around the reserve with mostly good gravel paths but if you're going to walk all the way round I'd advise to wear waterproof boots or shoes in the winter as it can get quite muddy in the woodland. Any time of day is good for photography but in winter keep an eye on the weather forecast for foggy/misty morning conditions as the reserve is very atmospheric with mist hanging over the water. Early morning is good for capturing roe deer and otter. In the summer there are lots of dragonflies and butterflies among the wildflowers which edge the pools. Anyone wishing to photograph bird life will find an assortment of birds ducks and geese along with sand martins.
